Kleuren ruiken

Are Drawings Art?

Drawing is as old as the cave drawings of prehistoric times, was rediscovered in Roman times and is once again in the spotlight in the 21st century.

Cave drawings

cave drawing Lascaux
cave drawing Lascaux

The art of drawing is as old as the first cave drawings like this beautiful drawing in the cave of Lascaux. This cave was discovered in 1940 by four French teenagers. This world-famous Lascaux cave is located in the Vézère valley near Montignac and has a large amount of well-preserved paintings. The works of art were created between 15,000 and 10,000 years ago, as far as is known. Read on at historiek.net and see many more beautiful cave drawings there.

The discovery of the art of drawing

While searching the Internet I came across this nice article by Paul Bröker about a warthog and the discovery of drawing which shows that cave drawings took place much earlier and a nice story from Roman times about a woman in love using her lover’s shadow to make a drawing of him.

The Big Draw

The art of drawing is more popular than ever. Drawing was not considered art in the 20th century, but as a means to make “Real Art.” In the 21st century, there are galleries showing only drawing art and a drawing by a well-known artist can easily fetch 40,000 Euros. There is also a focus on drawing like the Big Draw to raise awareness of drawing. The Big Draw is a worldwide drawing festival for everyone. At the end of May you can find the program for 2023. Read now about all the activities that have taken place before and get in the mood to participate this year!

Painting and drawing classes

With me you can take online painting and drawing classes and you can try it out for free with the challenge “Painting for a Month.” In this course you will get an assignment every week for four weeks. We will photograph, draw and paint and we will get inspiration from ourselves, art history and other contemporary artists. At the moment it is only available in Dutch, but it will be translated into English. If you want to keep posted, please assign to my newsletter.

The Big Draw

Crochet Ideas

Addicted in a good way, is it possible? Lately I’ve been all into crocheting. It is addictive to try all the different ideas I find on YouTube. There you can really find the most beautiful patterns and ideas. Here I share what I have been trying out. Later tutorials will follow, for now just the ideas.

Crocheted Green Zipper Pouch
Crocheted Green Zipper Pouch
Green Zipper Pouch Crocheted
Green Zipper Pouch Crocheted

This pouch of green thick shiny yarn has a zipper. You get the crochet pattern by wrapping the yarn, inserting and crocheting one stitch, then you will have three loops on the needle. You then pass the first loop through the other two so that you have one loop left. Then turn around again and slip into the next stitch and crochet one stitch and again pull the first loop through the two others. This creates the thick ribbing. Tutorial follows. Sign up for the newsletter if you want to be notified.

Rainbow scarf

Rainbow Scarf
Rainbow Scarf

This cute rainbow scarf with fringes is crocheted using the up and down stitch. With this pattern, you crochet a solid and a half stick alternately. This creates little holes which you insert in the next row. Also very pretty with plain yarn. Tutorial will follow later.

Pink Pouch and Card Holder

Pink Pouch and Card Holder

The pink card holder is made with the same stitch as the green pouch. The pouch with flap is crocheted with a stitch where you always crochet a loose and then skip a stitch giving you small holes. In the next row, stitch in the hole and crochet a solid, crochet a loose and stitch in the next hole. Step by step tutorials are in the works!

Crocheted little bag with belt

This purse is crocheted with a fun and easy stitch. You crochet a chain as wide as the bag is going to be. Then you crochet a loose, skip a stitch and crochet a solid in the next stitch. Just like the pink purse above. The band is made with four stitches on the needle. There are several variations to crochet a nice sturdy sling. I can’t explain those in one sentence, tutorial follows! Or search on YouTube yourself for tutorials, there is so much to find, really great!

Round Crocheting

Groen etui

Groen Etui
Groen gehaakt etui
Groen gehaakt etui gevuld
Groen gehaakt etui

Tutorial volgt.

Making gift boxes out of toilet rolls

From toilet rolls I made little boxes to put my homemade bracelets in to sell and give away. It is very simple and here are the steps you can follow to make them too. You can also plate the rolls with paper. I chose to use only a stamp of my logo.

gift box with logo stamps
Step 1

We start with a toilet roll 😉

Step 2

We fold an edge inward about 1 cm (0,39 inch). If it will be a little more, that’s fine.

Step 3

You do the same on the other side.

Step 4

One side is now finished, we are going to do the same on the other side.

Step 5
Step 5

Now you have folded the sides inward on both sides of the roll. The box is ready. You can still press it a little bit flat.

Step 6
Step 6

Now I will stamp my logo on the box.

Tiny Origami Booklet
Tiny Origami Booklet

We are going to make this cute tiny booklet from origami paper with this step by step tutorial.

Step 1

Step 1
Step 1

First fold a square (origami) piece of paper in half. The smaller the sheets, the smaller the booklet 😉
I took 7 sheets of 15 x 15 cm white paper. (= 5,9 x 5,9 inch)

Step 2

Step 2
Step 2

On the fold line, tear the sheet in half.

Step 3

Step 3
Step 3

Then fold the two sheets in half lengthwise.

Step 4

Step 4

And fold the double-folded sheet in half width-wise.

Step 5

Step 5

Then fold the bottom to the top.

Step 6

Step 6a
Step 6a

Turn the sheet over and fold the bottom to the top as well, it will look like as you can see in the picture below.

Step 6b
Step 6b

Step 7

Do this with each of the thirteen sheets. We don’t need the fourteenth, because we need an odd number.

Step 8

Step 8
Step 8

And fold all the sheets together into one big harmonica. Pay attention to two things:

  1. Slide them together in the right direction.
  2. Make sure the open side is on the back.

Step 9

Step 9
Step 9

The next one you slide exactly the other way around and that’s how you slide all the leaves together.

Step 10

Step 10
Step 10

To a large harmonica.

Step 11

Step 11
Step 11

We fold the harmonica together and hold it together with a clothespin or a big paper clip. The filling of the booklet is ready and we will continue making the cover.

Step 12

Step 12
Step 12

Take a nice origami sheet with print or with a solid color. This one is also 15 x 15 cm. ( 5,9 inch)

Step 13

Step 13
Step 13

Cut the sheet in half.

Step 14

Step 14
Step 14

We are going to cover the book like you cover a regular book. Make folds around the filling so you know how big it should be. See pictures below.

Step 14 b
Step 14b
Step 14 c
Step 14 c

Step 15

Draw two triangles where the back of the booklet will be and cut them out so you can fold it easily. On the top as well as on the bottom.

Step 16

Step 16
Step 16

Fold the top and bottom inward and then the sides as well.

Step 17

Step 17
Step 17

Now slide the first sheet of the harmonica filling into the cover.

Step 18

And slide the last sheet into the cover on the other side. Now you understand why we use an odd number of sheets.

Step 18b
Step 18b

You can also clamp it for a moment to prevent the leaves from sliding apart.

And the tiny booklet is ready!
